Job Description

T1 Diams, an NGO dedicated to supporting individuals living with Type 1 diabetes in Mauritius and Rodrigues Island, is seeking a motivated Health Care Assistant cum Trainee Diabetes Educator for a full-time position. 

Profile Overview: 
The Health Care Assistant (HCA) at T1 Diams will play a crucial role in supporting beneficiaries living with Type 1 Diabetes. Under the guidance of healthcare professionals, the HCA will assist individuals in managing their condition, offering both practical and emotional support. This role requires a compassionate approach to care, with a focus on ensuring the well-being and quality of life for those affected by Type 1 Diabetes.
 
Key Responsibilities: 

  • Patient Support: Assist beneficiaries with day-to-day management of Type 1 Diabetes, including monitoring blood glucose levels, administering insulin, and helping with meal planning and diet education. 
  • Health Monitoring: Regularly check and record vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and weight, and report any concerns to healthcare professionals. 
  • Emotional and Psychological Support: Offer empathetic support and encouragement to beneficiaries, helping them cope with the emotional challenges of managing a chronic illness like Type 1 Diabetes. 
  • Education and Guidance: Educate patients and their families on managing Type 1 Diabetes, including lifestyle choices, managing hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, and the importance of adherence to treatment plans. 
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate patient records and document observations, treatments, and any changes in condition. Ensure all records are kept up to date and in line with organizational standards. 

Collaboration with Medical Team: Work alongside nurses, doctors, and dieticians to deliver comprehensive care tailored to each beneficiary's needs. 

Job Requirements

Key Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Compassion and Empathy: Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine desire to support individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes. 
  • Knowledge of Diabetes Care: Understanding of the basics of diabetes management, including insulin therapy, glucose monitoring, and the importance of nutrition. 
  • Excellent Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with beneficiaries, their families, and the healthcare team. 
  • Experience in Healthcare: Prior experience as a Health Care Assistant or in a healthcare setting is preferred, especially in chronic disease management. 
  • Certification: Relevant health and social care qualifications (Certificates in Health and Social Care) are desirable. 
  • Team Player: Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide patient-centred care.

T1 Diams supports those with Type 1 diabetes. We have over 250 diabetic members aged between 14 months and 78 years, more than half of whom are primary, secondary and tertiary students.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the total absence of insulin production and is triggered during childhood, adolescence or puberty and rarely in older people.

We, at T1 Diams, provide them with correct care in terms of medical equipment, psychosocial monitoring and therapeutic education.
