Job Description
Insurance underwriters assess, evaluate, and decide whether to provide insurance coverage to individuals or businesses. They determine the level of risk involved in insuring a person or asset and set the terms and pricing for the policy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review insurance applications and related documents.
- Analyze risk using statistical data and industry standards.
- Decide on policy terms, coverage limits, and premiums.
- Use underwriting software and tools to assist in risk assessment.
- Liaise with brokers, agents, and clients to gather additional information.
- Ensure compliance with insurance regulations and company guidelines.
- Monitor existing policies and make adjustments as needed.
- Work closely with claims and actuarial teams.
Job Requirements
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in finance, insurance, business, economics, mathematics, or a related field.
- Some roles may require a master's degree for senior positions.
Professional Certifications (optional but valued):
- CII (Chartered Insurance Institute) – UK
- CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) – US
- LOMA/ALU certifications
- ACII, ANZIIF, or regional underwriting credentials.
